Volunteer Spotlight: Madoka Ushio
In celebration of Global Volunteer Month, we are thrilled to highlight Dream Big Campaign Committee member Madoka Ushio of SI/Asahikawa, Japan (Japan Kita Region)!
A major donor, Madoka has served as the Japan Country Manager of the Dream Big Campaign Committee since 2019. In her 25 years as a Soroptimist member, Madoka has also served as 2010-2012 Japan Kita Region Public Awareness Chair and 2014-2016 Japan Kita Region Governor. She will also join the 2023-2025 SIA Board of Directors.
Reflecting upon her time as a Soroptimist, one memory that comes to mind for Madoka is the support Japan Kita Region received following the 2011 Great Sendai earthquake. At that time, Soroptimists were dedicated to supporting earthquake survivors, regardless of the damage experienced at their own homes. “I received emails from Soroptimists all over the world. Thank you again for extending your helping hand,” Madoka shares.
Now, Madoka is committed to raising funds through the Dream Big Campaign to ensure that Soroptimist is a sustainable organization over the next 100 years. She works closely with a dedicated team of Japan Region managers, each representing one of the five Japan regions. Madoka believes that her work is supported by the belief that the Dream Big Campaign will lead to greater dedication to women and girls in the communities we serve.
Dream Big Campaign Committee Chair Diane Thompson commented on her experience of working alongside Madoka: “I am thankful that Madoka agreed to take on the role of Japan Dream Big Campaign Country Manager. She and her team have made great strides in bringing the campaign messages to members and encouraging philanthropy. Mostly, though, I have enjoyed the opportunity to develop a friendship with another member on the other side of the world.”
